Principal’s Message

Elaine Ernst

Welcome to Assumption Junior/Senior High School, home of the Crusaders! My name is Elaine Ernst and I am the Principal of this amazing school. As a long-time Cold Lake resident, Assumption School has been a part of my life for over thirty years as a student, teacher, and administrator and I am always excited to serve our students and community as I continue to watch Cold Lake and the area grow.

Located in beautiful Cold Lake, Alberta, Assumption School serves approximately 550 students from Grades 7-12 and is a great place to teach and learn! Our teachers are committed to providing a faith-based high-quality learning experience focused on the individual needs of each child. We offer dual-track programs, with both English and French Immersion offered for grades 7 through 12. In addition to high-quality core academic courses, students have the opportunity to participate in optional courses that range from the fine arts and music to industrial arts and cosmetology. Teachers and staff work hard to design instruction engaging for all students as they learn through a variety of academic, extra-curricular, and leadership activities in a faith-filled and inclusive environment. At Assumption School we believe in educating the whole child: academically, spiritually, socially, physically, and emotionally. Individual support for students is available through our Student Services Team which includes our administration, Family Outreach Worker, Academic and Career Counselor, and our Classroom Support Teacher.

Our modernized facility offers an environment ripe for creativity and learning as students work toward their Alberta High School Diplomas. It is vital that students today not only learn the academic skills necessary for post-secondary school but also take them through the 21st Century with the skills, knowledge, and attitudes needed for success. Our range of in-demand, cutting-edge, and industry-related training programs provides our students with opportunities to learn the knowledge and skills necessary for careers in a variety of trades and technical fields while accessing modern equipment used in the workplace today. For more information about available option courses, please see our website or contact the school.

Students at Assumption School have the opportunity to join a number of youth groups and activities to get involved in the school community and make new friendships that will last a lifetime. Lunchtime sees many students take part in ever-changing makerspaces and activities in our Library Learning Commons. Some may be found attending meetings for our active Youth Liturgical Leadership (YLL) group, fundraising for local and international charities, or preparing for the annual Battle of the Books competition. Some students choose to serve on our Students Union planning unique and creative spirit days, dances, and events for the student population. Still, others find a connection in our D&D club, participating in tabletop games. Each year, our staff provide ways for students to encourage students to connect with each other and enrich their experiences at Assumption School.

Check frequently on our website and social media to stay current with what is happening at AJSH!

Assumption School is also proud to offer a variety of Athletic and Fine Arts programs that serve to develop the character and interests of our students. As a Crusader, student-athletes can expect dedicated coaches, directors, and supervisors in award-winning athletic and fine arts programs that are provincially recognized and second to none.

The opportunities for students at Assumption School to become involved in athletics are many and include our Hockey Program, run in conjunction with the Cold Lake Junior B Ice. This program provides a unique opportunity for hockey players to get on the ice in the morning prior to classes where they are coached by the Cold Lake Ice Head Coach Scott Hood. For more information about this program, please contact the school.

Many other sports are offered at Assumption School. Students compete at the ward and district level in junior high, and at the district, zone, and provincial level in high school, providing opportunities to travel and compete in many communities across Alberta. We are always so proud of our amazing Crusaders! Check out the Athletics page for more details.

At Assumption School, we really are a family. We are unconditionally committed to providing the best possible educational program to our students. We believe that there are numerous opportunities, both in and out of our classrooms our students to gain the skills that will allow them to be successful in our ever-changing world.

We can’t wait for you to join us.
